LHMC FESTIVAL (Liverpool Mental Health)

‘A LITTLE VOICE TOLD ME’

An inspirational talk based event. Two inspirational women talk about the different ways in which hearing voices impacted on their lives and the lives of their loved ones.

“Learning From The Voices in My Head”

Dr Eleanor Longden overcame a diagnosis of schizophrenia to become an international mental health speaker and researcher. In this talk, she describes how she learnt to interpret her voices as a ‘sane reaction to insane circumstances’ and move from extreme distress and demoralisation towards hope, healing and recovery.

“Gillian’s Story”

Sarah Mottram talks about the detrimental impact of the mental healthcare system in not treating physical health alongside mental health, and one girl’s struggle to be heard.

FRIDAY 14th OCTOBER

GUEST SPEAKER & AUTHOR – HILARY GALLO

‘THE POWER OF SOFT’

19.00 – 21.00

Early on in his career Hilary wore a nice suit and negotiated multi million pound deals with an iron fist as if his blessed life depended on it. Slowly he worked out that this wasn’t him and that being hard didn’t actually work that well. Years of trying things out, some great mentors, some of the world’s best and worst training, a bit of therapy and quite a few good books helped him to find a better way. Hilary learned how to combine the power of soft with a strong, principled core.

The Power of Soft is a different way to approach negotiation not only in large organisations but in mediating small disputes and even working with primary school children – all life situations.

Hilary now coaches people who are either dealing with leadership challenges or dealing with life’s perennial question: “What am I going to do next?”

Hilary comes to Liverpool to talk about the book and the concept, as well as answer any questions from those who are curious.

Tickets are £9. £14 if you would like a Brink main course – in which case please order before 6.30pm

£5 concessions

BOOK CLUB                                                                                 18.30 – 20.00

We have a core group of literary enthusiasts who arrange a book club every other month at The Brink, who catch up to discuss the latest chosen novel. If you would like to get involved just get in touch with us and we will put you in touch.

TUESDAY 25th OCTOBER

NVC WORKSHOP (Nonviolent Communication)                   13.00 – 15.00

The work of pioneer Marshall B. Rosenborg

We generally communicate in a way which is competitive, judgmental – in terms of what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ with people. Misunderstanding, frustrations, anger, depression and sometimes violence can ensue with this approach. NVC transforms the thinking, language and moralistic judgments into one which enriches the relationships you dream of, whilst teaching you how to resolve conflict with ease and get what you want and need without using demands. Importantly it teaches us to hear the needs of others too.

These workshops are the first of its kind in Liverpool, where we aim to practise the ground-breaking techniques pioneered by Marshall B. Rosenberg.

It’s very much worth getting hold of a copy of the book first. Here is a link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nonviolent-Communication-Language-Marshall-Rosenberg/dp/1892005034

FRIDAY 28th OCTOBER                                                18.00 – 20.00

ART EXHIBITION – LAUNCH

‘FALLING UPWARD’

We’re pleased to announce our new art exhibition which will adorn the Brink walls for all-comers to witness over the coming months. This one has its inspiration and beginnings in crisis and follows a journey to a lighter place of resolution and peacefulness. All are welcome and it’s free entry.

 SATURDAY 29th OCTOBER

HALLOWEEN & BONFIRE NIGHT PARTY                  19.00 – 23.00

It’s a fantastic night, once again FREE ENTRY for all.
