Artist John Freyer is based in Richmond, Virginia USA

Through his arts and events project FIFTY FIFTY a travelling series of interdisciplinary, social arts projects he contributes to dialogue on addiction and recovery. Here’s how:

THREE separate events:

Tues 6thFREE ICE WATER – 5pm

Creates a space for individuals to be seated in pairs and have one on one, distraction-free, uninterrupted conversations about significant turning points in their lives for one hour. Participants will add a token of their conversation to an aquamarine blue mason jar, sign and seal the lid. The jars are then put on display and photographed for the programme. They act as symbols of something fragile yet lasting.

Wed 7thFREE HOT COFFEE – 2pm

Attendees are introduced to the rich history of coffee making of roasting, tasting and preparing.

Having made and sampled the coffees, participants will choose their own coffee which goes to a local supplier for roasting an bagging. This will be sold in The Brink for a week after.

The aim is to shed light on how creativity and participation can assist the recovery process, whilst also connecting people.

Fri 9thFREE HOT SUPPER – 5pm

All participants from the previous two events will be given a token which is entry for the FREE HOT SUPPER on this night. Tokens can be donated to others in Recovery or someone affected by addiction in any way. A community event where we can celebrate the whole week of fifty Fifty events.

RECOVERY STREET FILM FESTIVAL                   14.00 – 16.00

Every year now our parent charity Action on Addiction invite budding filmmakers who are in recovery to send in their short films. Themes are varied and eclectic and it really is a case of have a go no matter what your skills. This gives rise to lots of real life stories displayed in with ‘no frills’. Some efforts really do bear the hallmarks of skilled filmmakers too so it’s a great mix. Finalists from all over the UK have been selected and we will be showing all their work so come and see for yourself.

LIVE MUSIC with LIVERPOOL NOISE                           19.15 – 10.15

A brand new night by Liverpool Noise. Happening at numerous venues in future but kicking off here at The Brink with some great local bands on show. DARMA, SPQR, ELIJAH JAMES & THE NIGHTMARES are the ones making all the racket this time around. It’s £5 entry which is pure bang for your buck, especially as proceeds will go to Action on Addiction and support services.

Brink Travels – KENNET PRISON

Brink likes to make an effort to reach places where our help may be most welcome. There definitely is a need within prisons to assist with people’s passage from prison to the outside world and the support that is necessary for stability. We’re going to Kennet today to let them know all about what we do; our services and our safe social space and friendly, welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.

Brink Travels – LPOOL HOPE UNI – Health & Wellbeing

Off on our travels again, this time to another of our favourite places – Liverpool Hope University, to meet and greet the new students and let them know all about The Brink. We know the students like to have good fun when they come to our thrill-packed city but we know many also just want a break from it all now and again and that’s where we come in. A dry-space, no pressures, just good vibes, mocktails, belly filling burgers and free wifi…for the ones who do actually do any work during leisure time! J
